Globe and Mail Warns Bill C-18 Could Threaten Editorial Freedom
This post marks the start of the Michael Geist on Substack newsletter. The recent chaos at Twitter has caused many to rethink their social media outlets. I’ve always focused first and foremost on my blog at MichaelGeist.ca and Twitter feed (now mirrored at Mastodon). Over the past few years, I’ve also hosted a regular podcast called Law Bytes. This Substack will bring together all of that content into a regular newsletter. The Substack has been populated with past Law Bytes podcast episodes and blog posts from the past couple of months and will feature regular posts, the podcast, and micro-blogs from Twitter and Mastodon.
The big news of the day as a major Canadian news organization finally speaks to the reality of Bill C-18.
Two other tweets highlighted posts that add a bit more context, notably my post on the risks of Bill c-18 to an independent press and the extensive role of the government and CRTC in the news sector under this bill.
Meanwhile, good column by Chris Selley on the intersection between the Twitter meltdown and proposed government regulation of online harms.
